Justice Fathima Beevi, the trailblazing woman who made history as India's first female Supreme Court judge, passed away at the age of 96 in a private hospital in Kollam, Kerala. Her significant contributions extended beyond the judiciary, as she later served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission from 1993 to 1997 and went on to become the Governor of Tamil Nadu until 2001.
Justice Beevi's passing elicited condolences from dignitaries, including Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi, who highlighted her enduring contributions to public service. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan acknowledged her as the first woman from the Muslim community to join the higher judiciary, citing her life as an inspiration, especially for women. Kerala Health Minister Veena George expressed deep sorrow, noting Justice Beevi's bravery and numerous accomplishments. As a tribute, Justice Beevi has been posthumously selected for the Kerala Prabha Award. Her legacy stands as a testament to breaking barriers and paving the way for women in the Indian judiciary.
