Cyclone Michaung disrupts air travel in Chennai, over 1000 flights cancelled

Cyclone Michaung's heavy rain in Chennai faced extensive disruptions in air travel, leading to the cancellation of over 1000 flights connecting the city. IndiGo, one of the prominent airlines operating in the region, had to cancel 550 flights, while Vistara cancelled 10 flights from Chennai.

The adverse weather conditions prompted the closure of Chennai airport's runway for departures and arrivals, creating a significant impact on air traffic. Despite the cessation of rainfall, the city struggles to drain floodwaters, adding to the complexity of the situation. IndiGo managed to resume its flights around noon, but the broader impact on air travel remains substantial.

Moreover, the cyclone has now shifted its trajectory towards Andhra Pradesh, heightening concerns for the region. In an interconnected disruption, Visakhapatnam airport is presently closed, compounding the challenges for both air travel and residents. IndiGo, grappling with the fallout, has grounded 15 aircraft in Chennai due to airport closures and waterlogging, further emphasizing the widespread implications of Cyclone Michaung

IndiGo also cancelled 60 flights today and has 15 aircraft - 10 A-320/321 and five ATR - parked in Chennai. Chennai airport had shut its runway for departures and arrivals yesterday due to bad weather. IndiGo resumed its flights from Chennai around noon.
