TMC leader Mahua Moitra, who faced expulsion from the Lok Sabha last week on allegations of corruption, has reportedly been instructed to vacate her official residence.
The Lok Sabha's housing committee has formally written to the Urban Development Ministry, urging the initiation of procedures for her eviction. Ms. Moitra, who obtained the residence through a special quota, was ousted from the Lok Sabha on December 8 following an Ethics Committee investigation into 'cash for query' charges.
The decision to expel Mahua Moitra was prompted by an Ethics Committee report, which accused her of engaging in 'cash-for-query' practices. In response, Moitra vehemently denied the charges, delivering a passionate speech where she accused the Ethics Committee of lacking evidence.
Subsequently, she filed a petition with the Supreme Court on December 11, challenging her expulsion. Moitra accused the Ethics Committee of misuse, stating, "This LS has also seen the weaponization of the Parliamentary committee," and pledged a prolonged fight against what she perceives as unjust actions.
The Lok Sabha witnessed opposition members staging a walkout in solidarity with Moitra after the motion for her expulsion was adopted.
