In a bid to address concerns over the handling of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verified paper audit trails (VVPATs), Jairam Ramesh, senior Congress leader, and the party's general secretary in charge of communications, has sought a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. The request comes after the opposition INDIA bloc suggested alternative measures, including the handover of VVPAT slips to voters and 100% subsequent counting.
Ramesh, in a letter addressed to the CEC, highlighted a series of communications dating back to August 9, 2023, expressing concerns that the Election Commission of India (ECI) has yet to address adequately. Despite multiple requests for a meeting, Ramesh emphasized the lack of an audience or hearing granted to the opposition parties' delegation.
The letter outlined the opposition's continuous efforts to discuss and provide suggestions on the use of VVPATs, citing a resolution passed during a meeting of INDIA party leaders on December 20, 2023. Ramesh reiterated the legitimacy of the request, stating, "Surely, this is a perfectly reasonable and legitimate request."
