A wave of Indian celebrities and social media influencers has joined forces to advocate for a boycott of Maldives' tourism industry following a series of anti-India comments made by Maldivian individuals, including a government minister. The online campaign gained momentum amidst escalating tensions triggered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Lakshadweep, which seemingly irked some Maldivians.
Numerous Indian celebrities and social media influencers have aligned themselves with a growing online movement urging the public to boycott Maldives and its popular tourist destinations. The catalyst for this campaign was a series of anti-India comments, notably by Maldives minister Mariyam Shiuna, on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
The controversy originated from Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep, where he inaugurated development projects and showcased the region's picturesque beaches. However, the attempt to boost tourism apparently drew criticism from some quarters in the Maldives, leading to derogatory remarks and even racist comments against Indians by Maldivian netizens, further intensifying the diplomatic discord.
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has added his voice to the growing chorus, urging Indians to reconsider their travel plans to Maldives. Taking to X, Chopra stated, "‘India Out’ was a part of the manifesto. Maldives voted for it. Now, it’s up to us, Indians, to choose wisely. I know that my family will. Jai Hind." Social media influencer Sonam Mahajan echoed similar sentiments, encouraging fellow Indians to cancel trips, while Baba Banaras shared a captivating sunrise image of Lakshadweep, urging people to explore domestic destinations instead.
