Uttarakhand makes history: First state to enforce Uniform Civil Code

In a historic development, Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) after the UCC bill received unanimous approval in the state's legislative assembly. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, while presenting the bill, emphasized that the UCC aims to establish uniform laws for marriage, divorce, land, property, and inheritance, promoting equality for all citizens irrespective of religious affiliations.

During the assembly session, CM Dhami underscored the significance of the UCC, stating, "The Uniform Civil Code will give the right to equality to everyone without any discrimination on matters like marriage, maintenance, inheritance, and divorce."

The UCC Bill, a comprehensive legal framework, addresses crucial aspects such as child marriage, live-in relationships, and divorce procedures while ensuring equal rights for women regarding ancestral property. This groundbreaking move by Uttarakhand sets a precedent for other states to follow suit, fostering unity and equality across diverse communities.
