National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma led a delegation to Sandeshkhali on Monday, accusing the West Bengal government of stifling the voices of numerous women in the area amid protests against alleged atrocities by ruling TMC leaders.
She said "I want the victims to talk to me, the Women's Commission stands with them. We will take action on every complaint received from the victims. Be it murder or rape, the police do not take any action, on the contrary, they arrest the relatives of the victim. This situation is not only of Sandeshkhali but of the entire state. I will submit this report to the President and he will take further action. The women are scared because Sheikh Shahjahan is not being arrested. We need to press for the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan."
"The administration and the police are not listening to complaints of women and they do not do anything. Only one woman has come out and registered her statement before a magistrate. We want more women to come in the front... Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has never allowed her officers to meet teams of central officers as she is trying to hide the truth... but the truth will come out," Sharma said.
