16 new metro rail coaches discharged from Kolkata Port

A second lot of 16 Metro Rail coaches have been discharged from Netaji Subhas Dock in Kolkata on Thursday night. Each coach weigh about 48 tons. The coaches are to be supplied to the Eastern Railway who will later use them on existing and new routes. These coaches were delivered by vessel MV Bosi 58 on May 22.

Earlier in March, India's first underwater metro line began public operations in Kolkata and services run between Esplanade and Howrah Maidan. The commuters were seen queueing up for the first ride on the country's first-ever train ride under water and the serice is pulling huge crowd eversince.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated metro operations in Kolkata on March 6. After the inauguration, he also took a metro ride with students. During the journey, he engaged in conversations with them and the metro officials

In addition to the underwater metro, the PM also inaugurated the Kavi Subhash - Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro section and the Taratala - Majerhat section as well, which is part of the Joka-Esplanade line.

The latter features the Majerhat Metro Station, an architectural marvel being an elevated station spanning railway lines, platforms, and a canal, further showcasing the innovative approach towards improving urban transport.
