The Supreme Court on Wednesday held as legally maintainable the suit moved by the West Bengal government against the central government's directive allowing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct investigations in the Sandeshkhali case.
The Supreme Court said the Bengal government's suit on the CBI probing cases despite the withdrawal of consent by the state shall proceed per law on its own merits.
Interestingly, this comes a day after the apex court turned done the state government's plea challenging the Calcutta High Court’s order for a CBI probe into allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault in Sandeshkhali – in which suspended TMC leader Shahjahan Sheikh is a key accused.
In its plea before the apex court, the state government said the high court's order demoralized the entire state machinery, including the police force. The CBI is already investigating the case of an attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials in Sandeshkhali and has registered three FIRs related to incidents on January 5.
