The illegal hawker eviction drive of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is going on. In a recently done survey, the KMC officials have claimed that hawkers from states like Bihar and Jharkhand are occupying a big chunk of the footpaths in the city.
Acting on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s instruction of hosting initiatives to streamline hawking and curb encroachment of footpaths in the city’s shopping hotspots, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation surveyed Kolkata's shopping hotspots.
Meanwhile, the KMC on Sunday installed metal panels at the back of some hawkers’ stalls in Gariahat. But a gap between the panels and the stalls would allow rainwater to enter and damage the items, some of the hawkers said, adding that they might be forced to hang tarpaulin sheets to protect their wares.
A KMC official involved in the making of the panels said about 10 panels were installed as part of a pilot project. “We will make changes if required,” the official said.
