Poultry traders to stop supply of chicken in protest of police brutality

The supply of poultry chicken going to be hit as traders announce stopping the supply from Thursday. This comes after the alleged brutality of police during nighttime. According to reports, a few police personnel tried to take bribes from the driver carrying chickens. On not receiving it, they allegedly attacked the driver.

The incident reportedly took place in West Medinipur's Belda. The driver suffered head injuries and is receiving treatment at Belda Hospital. The West Bengal Poultry Traders Association is protesting police brutality in the wake of the incident.

Chairman Sandeep Das announced this decision after the meeting of the organization in Panshkura of East Medinipur. He said, “Police picketing on night roads was stopped for a few days across the state. But over the last one-and-a-half years, it has reared its head again. Even if they have valid documents, they are demanding huge amounts of money even if they take vehicles loaded with poultry. If you protest against it, you will be insulted and threatened with a false case.”

Giving an example of the incident, Sandeep Beldar said, "Sameer Ghosh, a resident of Shalbani, was driving a car loaded with chickens around 3:30 pm on July 11. Belda police stopped his car. After seeing all the valid documents, he was asked for a huge amount of money. When he did not want to pay that money, the police officials cracked his head with the torch in hand".

They went to the spot after receiving the news. The bludgeoned driver was found lying on the side of the road. His car was still impounded by the police. They rescued the driver and admitted him to the hospital.
