2 arrested as Gujarat family held hostage in Bengal over ₹15 lakh ransom for fake passports
A youth named Laxman Shaw was apprehended by police in Kolkata's Jorabagan area while attempting to smuggle a substantial quantity of ration rice. Acting on intelligence inputs, officials from the Enforcement Branch (EB) conducted a raid that led to the seizure of 400 kg of rice from Shaw's van.
Due to discrepancies in documentation and the inability to provide necessary papers, EB confiscated 8 bags of rice. The arrest of Laxman Shaw was swiftly followed by a court order for police custody until the 29th, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations.
Initial investigations revealed that all the seized rice was meant for ration distribution, prompting EB to intensify interrogation efforts to uncover the source and destination of the illegal consignment. Police suspect the involvement of additional individuals in the smuggling operation.
