Goldsmith duped of 5 crores in Kolkata using fake gold, 4 including 2 Bangladeshis arrested

A Bangladeshi gold fraud ring active in Kolkata has been exposed by police, leading to the arrest of four gang members, including two Bangladeshis. The incident came to light when a complaint was lodged at Shakespeare Sarani police station by a gold merchant who alleged being duped in a transaction involving gold worth Rs 5 crore. The incident took place in a hotel near Minto Park.

The gold merchant reported that the gang promised to buy gold ornaments from him in exchange for gold biscuits. Trusting the transaction, the merchant handed over gold jewelry worth crores, only to receive counterfeit gold biscuits in return. The biscuits, although appearing to be gold, were fake, leaving the merchant defrauded.

Police investigation into the incident led to the arrest of two Bangladeshis involved in the scheme. It is alleged that these individuals smuggled gold biscuits into India from Bangladesh. During the operation, more than 7 kg of gold jewelry was recovered, with a market value of Rs 5.22 crore. Authorities believe this case is part of a larger fraudulent operation driven by the high demand for Indian gold ornaments in Bangladesh.

According to sources, this fraudulent activity centers around the Boubazar Sonapatti area. While this particular incident has been uncovered, police are continuing their investigation to determine if there are more victims of similar frauds.
