On Wednesday, a strong resolution was brought in the West Bengal Assembly against the Indian Justice Code Act 2023, the Indian Evidence Act, and the Indian Civil Protection Code, all recently enacted by the Central Government. The resolution, presented by Law Minister Moloy Ghatak, faced fierce opposition from BJP members.
Minister Ghatak criticized the bills, which have been effective since July 1, arguing that they are not entirely in the people's best interest. He pointed out that the bills contain several provisions that are not beneficial to the public. Significant changes have been made to the BNS, with 20 new crimes added and 19 provisions of the IPC removed.
Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya also voiced her concerns, stating that many provisions of the IPC, including the Indian Evidence Act, have been intentionally omitted. She noted that the punishment for imprisonment has increased for 33 crimes. Bhattacharya alleged that the term "Indian" has been replaced with "Bharatiya" in several instances, implying that the central government aims to undermine the INDIA bloc.
