A tragic accident occurred on Sunday night in Hajipur, Vaishali district of Bihar, resulting in the deaths of 9 Kanwariyas due to electrocution. The group had set out to collect water from the Ganga river at Pahelaja Ghat for the Jalabhishek ritual of Baba Hariharnath.
Around 11:40 PM in Sultanpur village, near the Industrial Police Station area, the Kanwariyas came into contact with a high-voltage wire, leading to their instant deaths. Six others were severely burnt and are currently receiving treatment.
The accident happened when the procession, which included a DJ and sound system on a trolley, moved about 500 meters from the village and came into contact with an 11,000-volt wire. This caused the entire trolley to become electrified, killing those who touched it.
The victims were from Jethui village. Following the accident, angry locals blocked the Hajipur-Jandaha road, demanding the presence of electricity department officials. Police and fire brigade teams from five police stations arrived to manage the situation.
Despite police efforts, the villagers continued to block the road until early morning. The bodies were eventually taken to Sadar Hospital for post-mortem after prolonged negotiations. The situation remains tense as the injured are in critical condition, and the death toll may rise.
