Bangladesh Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan has announced his decision to step down from his position following massive student protests in the capital, Dhaka. The protests, which have gained considerable momentum in recent days, saw thousands of students and citizens gathering outside the Supreme Court, demanding Hassan's resignation.
Justice Obaidul Hassan, who was appointed to lead the Supreme Court last year, is widely perceived as a loyalist to the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The protesters, who have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with the current state of the judiciary, gathered in large numbers outside the court, chanting slogans and holding placards that called for Hassan's immediate resignation.
