Governor Bose launches 'Abhaya' home & portal for safety of doctors; Visits RG Kar

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Thursday to assess the situation following a violent incident of vandalism by unidentified miscreants. The visit comes in the wake of escalating tensions after the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered at the medical establishment last week.

Governor Bose engaged with the agitating junior doctors at the hospital, offering them reassurance and support. "I am with you, and we will work together to solve this. I assure you justice. My ears and eyes are open," the Governor assured the students, who have been expressing their concerns over safety and justice.

During his visit, Governor Bose also inspected the Emergency Department, which had been vandalized the previous night, further deepening the sense of insecurity among the medical staff.

In response to the distress expressed by the medical community, a group of at least 20 doctors from various state-run hospitals in Kolkata, mostly women, met with Governor Bose on Thursday. They sought his intervention and conveyed their fears following the recent violence. The Governor listened to their concerns and provided assurances of support.

To address the growing anxiety among doctors, the Governor's office has launched 'Abhaya Home,' a safe space where doctors who feel insecure can stay until they regain their confidence to move freely in the state. Additionally, an 'Abhaya Portal' has been opened, allowing doctors and the general public to call in for assistance if they are feeling distressed.
