In a powerful statement on Thursday, Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee addressed the ongoing uproar surrounding the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Expressing deep concern, Banerjee emphasized that despite the nationwide protests, a "lasting solution still remains largely undiscussed."
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee underscored the alarming rate of sexual violence in India. "Over the past 10 days, while the nation has been protesting against the #RGKarMedicalcollege incident and demanding justice, 900 RAPES have occurred across different parts of India - DURING THE VERY TIME WHEN PEOPLE WERE ON THE STREETS PROTESTING AGAINST THIS HORRIBLE CRIME. Sadly, a lasting solution still remains largely undiscussed," he wrote.
The Trinamool leader, who also serves as a Lok Sabha MP and is second-in-command to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, highlighted the urgency of the situation. With 90 cases of rape reported daily, Banerjee stressed the need for decisive action, proposing strong laws that ensure "TRIALS & CONVICTIONS WITHIN 50 days, followed by the severest punishments."
Banerjee called for state governments to urgently push the Union for a comprehensive anti-rape law. "Anything less is merely symbolic and tragically ineffective. WAKE UP INDIA," he urged.
