13 RG Kar doctors accused in 'threat culture' inquiry

An inquiry committee at RG Kar Medical College has named 13 senior doctors in a developing case regarding the alleged ‘threat culture’ at the institution. According to the testimony of several doctors, these senior figures are said to have created an environment of fear and intimidation in the hospital.

Former Dean Bulbul Mukhopadhyay and Pathology Professor Anjali Banerjee have been identified as key figures in this issue, with others like Debashis Som and Apoorva Biswas also under scrutiny due to their connection with previous controversial cases under CBI surveillance.

The situation escalated after a public interest litigation (PIL) was filed by Dr. Archisman Bhattacharya and a social worker, prompting a hearing at the Calcutta High Court. During the session, Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam expressed grave concerns about the safety of doctors working in the state's medical colleges. He highlighted alarming reports, such as a female doctor who stated that her father gave her a knife for self-protection, and another who carries pepper spray for safety while at work.

The RG Kar authorities are working to address the issue by seeking the opinion of the inquiry committee regarding the accused doctors. This investigation aims to uncover the extent of the alleged threats and hold accountable those responsible for the hostile atmosphere within the medical college.
