Special court to hear CBI's plea for narco-analysis in RG Kar case

A special court in Kolkata is set to hear the Central Bureau of Investigation's (CBI) plea for conducting a narco-analysis test on the former principal of R. G. Kar Medical College & Hospital on September 30. This request is part of the ongoing investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor within the hospital premises. The case has garnered significant attention, highlighting the serious issues surrounding safety in medical institutions.

On the same day, the court will also consider the CBI's plea for a polygraph test on Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tala Police Station, which falls under the jurisdiction of R.G. Kar Medical College. Both Ghosh and Mondal are currently in judicial custody and are expected to appear in court for the hearing. The CBI has previously conducted a polygraph test on Ghosh and seeks a narco-analysis to cross-verify the findings.

The distinction between the polygraph test and narco-analysis is notable. While the polygraph measures physiological responses such as blood pressure and pulse to detect deception, the narco-analysis involves administering sodium pentothal, commonly known as "truth serum." This procedure aims to induce a hypnotic state where the subject may be more likely to divulge the truth. It’s crucial to note that consent is mandatory for both tests, making ethical considerations central to the investigative process.

On September 25, the special court denied bail applications for both Ghosh and Mondal, emphasizing the gravity of their charges, which include misleading the initial investigation and tampering with evidence. The presiding judge warned that if convicted, they could face capital punishment, underlining the severe implications of their alleged actions.
