In a sharp critique of the current security situation in the national capital, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal declared on Sunday that a "jungle raj" prevails in Delhi. His remarks followed a troubling series of shooting incidents that occurred within a 24-hour span, prompting concerns over public safety and effective governance. Kejriwal took to X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing that the responsibility for maintaining law and order lies with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He called for immediate and decisive action to restore safety in the city.
Kejriwal's statement comes amidst reports of rising gang activity and extortion attempts, with AAP leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj highlighting recent shootings targeting commercial establishments. He noted incidents at a sweet shop in Nangloi, a luxury car showroom in Naraina, and a hotel in Mahipalpur, where gunfire erupted early Saturday morning. Bharadwaj criticized the absence of Delhi’s lieutenant governor, who is currently abroad, and questioned the accountability of the ruling BJP amid increasing crime rates.
During a recent session of the Delhi Assembly, AAP MLAs voiced their fears regarding the safety of traders and business owners, who have reportedly been bombarded with extortion calls from organized gangs. They accused the Delhi police of being ineffective in addressing these threats, which has resulted in a significant erosion of public trust in law enforcement. The atmosphere of fear has led some individuals to resort to directly negotiating with gangs, bypassing the authorities altogether. As incidents of violence continue to rise, both Kejriwal and Bharadwaj are calling for urgent attention to the deteriorating law and order situation in the capital.
pic.twitter.com/bLc3otocYa
