Bengal govt reverses decision, preserves last double-decker bus for museum display

The West Bengal government has opted to preserve the state's last double-decker bus, reversing a prior decision to scrap it due to high maintenance costs. This iconic vehicle, which ceased operations in the early 2000s, will undergo renovation and be displayed in a government museum, a move that highlights the administration’s commitment to cultural heritage and historical preservation.

The initial decision to retire the bus stemmed from the transport department's concerns regarding the escalating expenses associated with maintaining the aging vehicle. However, following a public outcry ignited by viral images of the bus being taken to a scrap yard in late September, officials re-evaluated their stance. A senior transport official remarked, “After a lot of deliberation, we have decided to rebuild the bus and display it in a government museum. This bus is part of our city's identity and history.”

The double-decker bus, manufactured by the renowned British company AEC, was introduced to Kolkata's roads in the 1950s and quickly became a beloved feature of the city's public transport system. With its vibrant red exterior and the iconic tiger logo of the Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC), the bus not only served commuters but also became a cultural symbol representing the city’s spirit. The CSTC operated these buses extensively until the early 2000s, playing a vital role in the daily lives of many residents.

The upcoming museum display will also feature models of hand-pulled rickshaws and dolis, which were once common forms of transport in Kolkata. This inclusion aims to provide a comprehensive narrative of the evolution of transportation in the city, showcasing the transition from traditional to modern forms of travel. The exhibit is expected to highlight the socio-economic dynamics of Kolkata’s transport history, illustrating how these modes of transport reflect the city's development over the decades.

Restoration efforts for the double-decker bus will focus on both aesthetic and functional aspects, ensuring it is brought back to its original glory. The renovation will involve repairing the bus’s bodywork, refurbishing the interior, and restoring its historical markings and logos. This meticulous restoration process will be carried out by specialists experienced in preserving vintage vehicles, with the goal of making the bus an educational and visually engaging attraction.

The decision to preserve the double-decker bus aligns with broader initiatives by the West Bengal government to promote tourism and cultural heritage. By showcasing this historical vehicle, the government hopes to attract both local and international visitors to the museum, enriching the cultural landscape of Kolkata.
