Amid the festive season, the Bengal government has delivered significant news for senior citizens. The state is set to expand its old age pension scheme, with about one and a half lakh new beneficiaries to be added after the Puja holidays. This initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to improve welfare measures for the elderly. The pension scheme, which provides monthly financial support, has been a key program since Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took office.
Under this scheme, senior citizens over the age of 60 in Bengal currently receive a monthly pension of ₹1,000. According to recent data, over 20 lakh individuals already benefit from this allowance. With the upcoming expansion, that number is expected to grow by an additional 1.5 lakh beneficiaries.
A comprehensive survey has been completed to identify those eligible for this new pension phase. The state government is preparing to roll out the inclusion of these beneficiaries shortly after the offices reopen following the Durga Puja break.
While the Bengal government covers the majority of the pension costs, the central government also contributes. The center offers ₹300 per month for those aged between 60 and 80, while the state covers the rest. For those above 80, the central contribution rises to ₹500, with the remaining amount still paid by the state. The increase in the number of beneficiaries has been strategically planned to ensure that the elderly population in need receives timely financial assistance.
