Rare surgery at NRS removes two twin fetuses from newborn’s abdomen

In an extraordinary medical case, doctors at NRS Medical College have successfully removed two twin fetuses from the abdomen of a newborn. This rare surgery took place after the infant, originally from Malda, was transferred to NRS when just two days old. The newborn exhibited symptoms that led to a prompt referral to the pediatric department.

Upon admission, the baby underwent extensive diagnostic evaluations over an 18-day observation period. Doctors confirmed the presence of two twin fetuses in the newborn's abdomen, a condition known as fetus in fetu. This phenomenon typically occurs when remnants of one fetus get absorbed into the abdomen of another during development. However, it is extremely unusual to find two such fetuses in one newborn.

Dr. Kaushik Saha, who led the pediatric surgery team, explained that the twins were not fully formed but had developed rudimentary features, including limbs and parts of the spine. Remarkably, each fetus had formed fingers and toes, adding to the complexity of the surgical procedure. The surgery required careful planning and execution, showcasing the expertise of the medical team involved.

Following the successful operation, the newborn is now in stable condition and recovering well in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The medical staff continues to monitor the baby closely for any potential complications.

Despite the ongoing hunger strike affecting some hospital services, healthcare at NRS remains uninterrupted. Dr. Saha emphasized that the team's commitment to patient care is unwavering, ensuring that critical medical procedures like this one continue without disruption.
