Himanta Biswa blames infiltration for rising Muslim population in Jharkhand

BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, serving as co-in-charge for the Jharkhand assembly elections, has stirred debate with claims about demographic shifts in Jharkhand, alleging that the rise in the Muslim population and decline in the tribal population are results of infiltration. Speaking to ANI on Monday, Sarma drew parallels to Hindu mythology, comparing his stance against alleged infiltrators to Lord Hanuman’s legendary setting of Lanka on fire. Sarma called for a crackdown to "make Jharkhand a golden land."

In his address, Sarma claimed, “The increase in Muslim population every five years suggests infiltration, as it’s unlikely that families are producing ten to twelve children each." He questioned how the demographic shift could be explained without suggesting a large-scale entry from neighboring areas. Sarma urged that infiltrators be identified and removed from areas such as Santhal Pargana, a region with a significant tribal population.

Sarma also pointed to a reported internal document from the Jharkhand government, suggesting that intruders were allegedly receiving training in local madrasas and even obtaining Aadhar cards to facilitate integration. He believes that these alleged activities further highlight the urgency for stricter checks on population growth in Jharkhand and justified the need for a National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the Santhal Pargana region.

Despite the sensitive nature of his claims, Sarma emphasized that his priority extends beyond electoral victories. According to him, the aim is to "throw out infiltrators" and ensure “justice for women” affected by these demographic changes. He asserted that a BJP-led government would take immediate steps to implement an NRC to address these alleged issues.

The BJP leader has faced criticism from opposition members, who have challenged the accuracy and motivations behind his statements. However, Sarma maintains that his observations are based on simple “mathematics” and the need for preserving the cultural fabric of Jharkhand’s tribal communities.

His comments come as Jharkhand heads into a crucial election period, with the BJP pushing for a robust stance on border security and citizenship issues. Sarma’s assertions may resonate with voters concerned about socio-political changes in Jharkhand’s tribal heartland, particularly amid longstanding discussions on the implementation of the NRC.
