38 injured in Alipurduar bus collision, three critical; Tourists from Gujarat and Assam involved

A major accident occurred early Sunday morning, involving two tourist buses on National Highway 31 near Majidkhana in Alipurduar 2 block. The collision left 38 passengers injured, with three in critical condition. The buses, which were carrying a group of 80 tourists from Gujarat who had traveled to Assam’s Kamakhya temple, were on their return journey when the crash took place around 5:30 AM. The first bus, while approaching the end of a four-lane section, abruptly applied the brakes. The second bus, traveling closely behind, was unable to stop in time and collided with the rear of the first bus, causing significant damage to both vehicles.

Local residents, along with nearby travelers, rushed to the scene to assist the injured passengers. They helped transport the victims to Alipurduar District Hospital, where 24 individuals were admitted. Among the injured, three remain in critical condition, and their condition continues to be monitored. Hospital sources confirmed that the injured passengers include both men and women of varying ages, from young adults to elderly individuals. The severity of the injuries varies, with some sustaining fractures, while others are being treated for contusions and head injuries.

The buses were headed to two popular destinations: Gangasagar in West Bengal and Deoghar in Jharkhand. Both buses were carrying large groups of tourists, and it is reported that the first bus, after the sudden brake application, suffered severe damage to its rear, while the second bus sustained extensive damage to its front end. Police and transport authorities are reviewing the incident and have initiated an investigation into the causes of the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of the first bus may not have noticed the transition from a four-lane to a two-lane road, leading to the abrupt braking. Investigations are also examining the road conditions, vehicle safety features, and whether both drivers were adhering to road safety norms. Authorities are coordinating efforts to assist the injured passengers, and traffic along National Highway 31 was temporarily disrupted for the rescue operation.
