TMC councillor accused of threatening, assaulting man over shed construction

An incident involving TMC councillor Abhijit Roy and local businessman Parthasarathi Nag took place in the 1st Ward of Chandrakona Municipality, located in West Medinipur district. The dispute centered around the construction of a tin shed near a municipal drain in the Gobindapur area. Parthasarathi Nag, who was building a nursing home on his land, began constructing the shed in front of his property. Roy, who is the councillor for Ward 1, reportedly intervened, claiming that the construction was violating municipal regulations due to its proximity to the government drain.

According to Nag, Roy arrived at the site and instructed that the work be halted immediately. Roy allegedly raised concerns that the shed, being built near the drain, was against local regulations, and he directed that the construction cease. Nag disputes these claims, asserting that the shed was being built on his own property and did not obstruct the drain.

The situation escalated when Roy is said to have physically confronted Siddhartha Nag, Parthasarathi’s brother. According to Parthasarthi, Roy pushed and shoved Siddhartha, which led to him falling ill. Siddhartha was subsequently taken to the Chandrakona Rural Hospital for medical attention. Parthasarathi and Siddhartha both maintain that the construction was compliant with regulations, stating that no part of the shed obstructed or encroached upon the municipal drain.

Abhijit Roy, in response to the allegations, defended his actions, stating that he had been acting on complaints from local residents. He also claimed that he had informed Parthasarathi Nag that the construction was unauthorized and that the proper procedures should be followed, including consulting the municipal engineer. Roy added that the shed was being constructed without permission and was encroaching on the drain area. The municipal chairman, when asked about the incident, stated that he was unaware of the matter. The incident has raised questions about the role of local authorities and whether proper procedures were followed in both the construction and the councillor’s actions.
