The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has expelled two senior leaders from its education cell due to anti-party activities. Netizens say the leaders have been expelled after they publicly expressed support for party leader Abhishek Banerjee. The leaders, Monishankar Mondal, vice-president of the WebCooper professor’s organization, and Pritam Halder, executive president of the Madhyamik Teachers’ Association, were removed from all party positions. The announcement was made by Bratya Basu, the education cell president and state education minister, citing accusations of anti-party activities as the basis for their expulsion.
The controversy began after Monishankar Mondal posted on social media, calling Abhishek Banerjee a “Game Changer Dada” following the TMC’s landslide victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. His post, which appeared to elevate Banerjee's leadership role, did not align with the party’s collective messaging, raising concerns within the TMC leadership. Mondal later posted about Jahar Sarkar’s resignation from the Rajya Sabha, suggesting that Abhishek Banerjee was needed to build a strong government. These actions were closely monitored by party leaders, ultimately leading to their expulsion.
TMC leadership took issue with the leaders’ actions, accusing them of promoting just Abhishek Banerjee’s image over the collective leadership of the party. Both Mondal and Halder were seen as violating the party's internal discipline by publicly elevating a single leader, which was interpreted as a challenge to the unity of the party. The decision to expel them was made after a thorough evaluation of their social media posts and public statements, which were seen as undermining the party’s internal cohesion.
Monishankar Mondal, in response to his expulsion, defended his actions, stating that his posts were intended to show support for Abhishek Banerjee and were not against the party. He emphasized that his posts were made to highlight Banerjee’s leadership capabilities following the party's success. Mondal also revealed that he had been contacted by Bratya Basu after his posts, with the minister allegedly using harsh language in the conversation. Despite this, Mondal continued to express his admiration for Banerjee, posting multiple images of him on his social media accounts.
Apart from this, the Trinamool Congress has also expelled another leader, Tarun Tiwari, who is the secretary of the Youth Trinamool. A complaint was filed against this leader of the Youth Trinamool at the Posta police station yesterday for allegedly using the name of Abhishek Banerjee.
Following their expulsion, both Mondal and Halder have continued to show strong support for Abhishek Banerjee. Mondal has written on his Facebook wall, “I don't like fake and hypocrites, so I have chosen Abhishek as my leader,” further emphasizing his loyalty. The social media activity of both leaders has been heavily focused on praising Banerjee, despite their removal from the party.
The expulsion has created an internal rift within the TMC, with some party members questioning the handling of internal dissent. While the leadership stands by its decision, the issue has sparked discussions about how the party should manage expressions of support for individual leaders. The TMC’s response to this incident has raised questions about maintaining party unity while addressing differences in leadership loyalty. As the situation develops, the handling of internal conflicts and dissent will be crucial for the party’s future cohesion.
