In a critical step forward in the ongoing teacher recruitment scam investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been granted permission by a special court to collect the voice sample of Sujoykrishna Bhadra, also known as Kali Ghater Kaku. This decision was made in response to the CBI’s request for the sample as part of their ongoing probe into Bhadra's suspected involvement in the high-profile corruption case. The voice sample will assist the agency in verifying and cross-checking evidence related to the investigation.
Sujoykrishna Bhadra, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on May 23, 2023, had been under medical care due to health complications, which delayed the collection of his voice sample. After prolonged legal procedures, Bhadra’s voice sample was finally taken on January 3, 2024, at the Joka ESI hospital. However, the CBI, which is now overseeing the case, sought a fresh court order to collect the sample for its investigation. The agency believes this step is vital in strengthening the evidence against Bhadra.
Bhadra had been in CBI custody for four days before the agency filed for his transfer to judicial custody. The CBI cited Bhadra’s refusal to consume food and medication during a hunger strike, which led to a worsening of his health, including increased blood sugar levels. The agency expressed concerns that Bhadra’s deteriorating condition could affect his ability to provide further cooperation in the investigation. As a result, the CBI opted not to retain him in their custody, instead requesting judicial custody to ensure the integrity of the case.
The CBI’s decision was also based on concerns regarding Bhadra’s lack of cooperation with the investigation. CBI lawyer Sandeep Choudhury confirmed that Bhadra had not been forthcoming with critical information despite being aware of several aspects of the case. Given Bhadra’s political connections and influence, the CBI also raised the possibility that he could attempt to interfere with the investigation if granted bail. These factors contributed to the agency's request for judicial custody.
Bhadra’s defense lawyer, Selim Rahman, opposed the CBI’s request, arguing that his client had no links to any political party or leaders. Rahman emphasized Bhadra’s health conditions, including recent bypass surgery and the recent death of his wife, asking for consideration of his personal circumstances in the decision. The defense lawyer suggested that Bhadra be granted bail or placed under house arrest due to these health concerns.
After hearing both parties, the court ruled in favor of the CBI’s request, ordering that Bhadra be remanded to 14 days of judicial custody. The court's decision reflects the ongoing efforts of the CBI to gather evidence and ensure the proper legal procedures are followed in the investigation into the teacher recruitment scam. The case continues to develop, with further steps expected to be taken as the investigation progresses.
