A TMC worker was killed in the Gokulnagar Gram Panchayat area of Nandigram, East Medinipur, on the night of December 25. The victim, Mahadev Shrisai, also known as Billa, was reportedly beaten to death by unidentified assailants in front of his small wooden stall located in the Satenga Badi area. Shrisai was an active member of TMC, associated with the Vrindabanchak 253 number booth. This incident follows the killing of another TMC worker, Srikant Mondal, who was attacked with sharp weapons at his home in the same region earlier this month.
The killing of Shrisai sparked protests by TMC workers and supporters, who gathered in the area demanding justice for the victim. Local police responded by deploying additional forces to manage the protests and prevent further escalation. At the scene, police officials initiated an investigation, although no arrests have been made as of now. Officers are collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses in an attempt to identify the perpetrators.
State Minister Akhil Giri addressed the situation, alleging that Shrisai was an active BJP worker and was killed in front of his shop early in the morning. He further mentioned that there had been a similar incident recently, with another TMC worker being murdered. He also expressed concerns over increasing violence and intimidation in the region, suggesting that it might be part of a broader strategy to create fear. BJP leaders have denied any involvement in the killing. BJP State President Sukanta Majumdar called for an impartial investigation and emphasized that the party does not support violence.
The police investigation is focusing on identifying the motive behind the attack, with potential political tensions in the area being considered. Authorities are looking into the possibility of a link to internal political rivalries as well as the broader political atmosphere in Nandigram. The situation in the area remains tense, with protests continuing and police working to maintain order and security.
