The Election Commission has announced that the Delhi Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on February 5, with votes being counted on February 8. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with senior officials, revealed the schedule at a press conference today.
The elections come as the current term of the 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly is set to expire on February 23. To ensure a smooth transition, the polls will take place well in advance. Delhi, known for its single-phase elections, will once again follow this tradition.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, is seeking a third consecutive term, emphasizing its achievements in healthcare, education, and infrastructure. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is intensifying its campaign to end AAP’s dominance in the capital. Meanwhile, the Congress, which partnered with AAP during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has chosen to contest independently, criticizing both AAP and BJP.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar also highlighted India’s growing electoral strength, announcing that the country is on the verge of reaching a record one billion registered voters. "We are crossing 99 crore voters and will soon become a nation of one billion voters," he said.
Mr. Kumar further noted that 2024 has been a historic year globally, with two-thirds of the world’s population in democracies participating in elections. He called it a testament to the growing importance of democratic processes worldwide.
With the announcement of the election dates, the political atmosphere in Delhi is expected to heat up. All eyes will be on the capital as political parties vie for dominance in one of India's most high-profile elections.
