The Sealdah Division of Eastern Railways has outlined detailed plans to manage the significant increase in passenger traffic during the 2025 Gangasagar Mela, scheduled from January 9 to 17. To address the heightened demand, 15 additional trains will be introduced, running between Sealdah and Namkhana. In addition to the 85 regular trains already operating daily on this route, these extra services will provide much-needed capacity. Two reserve trains will also be kept on standby—one at Sealdah and another at Namkhana. These will be deployed if passenger numbers rise beyond expected levels, helping ensure efficient service during peak times.
To ensure safety and manage the large crowd expected at various stations, the railway authorities have implemented speed restrictions along the Bagbazar to Princep Ghat section. From January 8 to 17, trains will operate at a reduced speed of 15 km/h, as heavy pedestrian traffic is expected in Babughata and nearby areas. This measure is being enforced to minimize the risk of accidents as devotees and pilgrims walk along the tracks. Additionally, train drivers have been instructed to sound their horns frequently in areas with high foot traffic to alert pedestrians and prevent any mishaps.
Security at key stations is being bolstered in response to the high volume of passengers and ongoing security concerns. A total of 25 senior Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers will be assigned to oversee operations at Sealdah, Kakdwip, Namkhana, and Kolkata stations. Additional security measures include the deployment of plainclothes officers, sniffer dogs, and regular patrols. TTEs (Train Ticket Examiners) will also be tasked with supplementary responsibilities related to passenger safety, focusing on crowd management and preventing any disruptions or security incidents.
Along with security, Eastern Railways is ensuring that adequate provisions are in place for passenger comfort. Medical services, drinking water, and sanitation facilities will be available at all major stations, particularly those handling large crowds. In addition, RPF personnel will be stationed at strategic points to assist passengers and ensure safety during the event. The railway authorities are closely coordinating with local officials to maintain smooth operations throughout the Mela, aiming to provide a safe, efficient, and comfortable travel experience for all attendees.
