4-storey residential building collapses in South Kolkata's Baghajatin

A four-storey apartment building in Baghajatin, South Kolkata, tilted on Monday evening, leading to the immediate evacuation of all residents. Police sources confirmed that no one was trapped or injured in the incident. The building, located in the Vidyasagar Colony area, was reported to have tilted at a significant angle, prompting fears about its structural integrity.

Earlier, cracks had been noticed in the building, raising concerns about its stability. As a result, the local authorities had initially evacuated the residents. However, after the evacuation, some residents reportedly returned to the building, despite warnings regarding its condition. The building had been approved for only three storeys by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, but the construction of a fourth storey was alleged to have taken place, potentially violating building regulations.

Municipal authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the tilt, with experts examining the structural flaws that might have led to the incident. They are also reviewing similar buildings in the area to assess their safety and compliance with building codes. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been alerted about the unauthorized construction of additional floors and is expected to take action against the violations.
