Central Govt focuses on coal mine tourism in Bengal with ECL’s plan for eco-parks

The central government has launched an initiative to develop coal mines across India, including several in Bengal, into tourism destinations. The project is being led by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), which has started the process of transforming coal mining sites into tourist attractions. The objective is to create eco-friendly attractions where visitors can learn about coal mining and witness the extraction process firsthand.

The Jharjhara Colliery in Bengal is one of the first sites selected for this initiative. The development plans for Jharjhara include the creation of an eco-park, where tourists will be able to view the entire coal extraction process and gain insights into mining techniques. Along with Jharjhara, ECL is also focusing on other coal mining regions in Bengal, such as Salanpur and Madhusudanpur, where similar eco-parks and tourism infrastructures will be developed. The aim is to attract visitors to these regions by combining environmental conservation with educational tourism.

The Ministry of Coal has outlined specific guidelines for coal companies such as ECL, BCCL, and others in India to explore the possibility of developing mining areas into tourism hubs. As part of the initiative, coal companies have been asked to submit proposals for such developments by June 30. These proposals will then be reviewed by the Ministry of Coal to finalize plans for tourism projects. In addition to the coal mines in Bengal, this initiative will also target 32 other coal mining regions across India, including sites in Jharkhand and other states.

The proposed developments include a range of recreational and educational facilities. Beyond eco-parks, some sites will feature water parks, boating facilities, and other amenities to enhance the visitor experience. The tourism development plans are also designed to generate employment opportunities in these areas and stimulate local economies by attracting tourists. Local authorities, including state tourism departments, are collaborating with coal companies to ensure the smooth execution of these projects.

In addition to boosting tourism and economic growth, the initiative has an environmental component. Efforts will be made to restore ecological balance by planting trees and vegetation in areas affected by coal extraction. The combination of eco-parks, recreational facilities, and environmental restoration is expected to provide a sustainable model for coal mine tourism, which could serve as a model for similar projects in other parts of the country.
