Sanjay Roy, the man convicted of the rape and murder of a young female doctor at RG Kar Medical College, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Shyambazar court on Monday. The sentencing came after a lengthy trial, during which Roy was found guilty of sexually assaulting and murdering the doctor. The verdict follows extensive legal proceedings and public debate surrounding the case, which has been one of the most talked-about criminal trials in recent times.
The court session, which started around 11 AM, saw Roy maintaining his innocence. He claimed that he had been framed and was coerced into signing blank papers. He further asserted that he had been forced to remain silent during the investigation. Despite his claims, the judge, Anirban Das, confirmed that the evidence presented during the trial had conclusively proven Roy's guilt. In his defense, Roy stated that he was wrongfully implicated in the crime, but the court dismissed his arguments.
In the sentencing, Judge Anirban Das imposed a life sentence on Roy under two different sections of the Indian Penal Code. In addition, Roy was fined 50,000 rupees, with the stipulation that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional five months of imprisonment. Furthermore, Roy received a life imprisonment sentence under a third section, related to the murder of the victim. The court also awarded the victim’s parents 17 lakh rupees as compensation for their loss.
As the court proceedings concluded, Roy was escorted from the courtroom by police officers. As he was being led away, he was overheard muttering the words, "I’ve been disgraced." Roy’s defense continued to insist on his innocence, but the court’s decision marked the culmination of a trial that brought some sense of justice to the victim’s family.
