Two arrested with ₹1.98 lakh in Rs 500 fake notes near India-Bangladesh border

On Thursday night, Baishnabnagar police arrested two individuals, Abdus Rahim and Rahim Sheikh, after recovering ₹1.98 lakh in counterfeit currency from them. The arrest took place in Chakdeonapur, located just a few kilometers from the India-Bangladesh border. Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid and apprehended the suspects, who were allegedly planning to transport the fake notes.

The counterfeit currency recovered from the suspects was entirely in the denomination of ₹500 notes. The total amount seized was ₹1,98,000. The two men were caught near Chakdeonapur Stand, where they had gathered with the counterfeit notes before preparing to leave the area in a car.

Both Rahim and Sheikh are residents of the Chakdeonapur area. Following their arrest, they were presented before the Malda court on Friday. The police have launched an investigation into the source of the counterfeit currency and whether it is connected to a larger smuggling operation. The authorities are also looking into any possible cross-border involvement, given the proximity to the India-Bangladesh border.
