Legendary actor & filmmaker Manoj Kumar passes away at the age of 87
On Wednesday, January 29, at 5:01 PM, a signal point malfunction at the entrance of Dakshineswar station caused the suspension of metro services between Noapara and Dakshineswar. The malfunction left commuters stranded as the metro service, which connects key areas in the northern part of Kolkata, was disrupted during the evening rush hour. The affected stretch saw an immediate halt in operations, significantly inconveniencing office-goers returning home. Passengers had to seek alternative transportation options as metro services were temporarily suspended.
While services from Noapara to Dakshineswar were halted, the section from Noapara to Kavi Subhash continued operating without disruption. Dakshineswar station, which has seen increased passenger traffic since the Blue Line extension was completed, remains a vital terminal point for the metro line. The Blue Line’s extension to Dakshineswar has helped improve connectivity in the area, and the station now serves as a key hub for passengers traveling to and from the northern parts of the city.
Meanwhile, the Kolkata Metro's expansion plans continue with the successful trial run of the Noapara-Airport stretch. This 7.04-kilometer segment includes four stations: Noapara, Dumdum Cantonment, Jessore Road, and Joy Hind (Airport). The Airport station, which is an underground facility, is set to be one of Asia's largest metro stations, with two subway tunnels planned to connect different parts of the metro network. The commercial launch of this stretch is expected to improve connectivity to the city’s airport, with an anticipated boost in passenger traffic.
