PM Modi slams Sonia Gandhi’s

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday strongly condemned Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s comment referring to President Droupadi Murmu as a "poor thing" after her speech at the joint sitting of Parliament. Modi called the remark an insult to both President Murmu and the tribal community, as Murmu hails from the Santhal tribe and is the first tribal woman to hold the office of the President of India. President Murmu’s mother tongue is Odia, not Hindi, and she delivered her speech in Hindi, which Modi highlighted as a testament to her efforts.

Speaking at a rally in Dwarka, Delhi, Modi criticized the Congress leadership, particularly the "royal family" of Congress, for disrespecting President Murmu. He remarked, "Droupadi Murmu ji has come from a tribal family. Her mother tongue is not Hindi; it is Odia. She delivered a wonderful speech today, inspiring Parliament. But the Congress’s ‘royal family’ has started insulting her." Modi pointed out that a senior Congress leader called President Murmu’s speech "boring," and another leader described her as a "poor thing." Modi condemned these remarks as an affront to not just the President, but to the entire tribal community in India, which constitutes over 10 crore people.

Modi also accused the Congress party of having a history of undermining the dignity of individuals, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds. He stated that the Congress leadership's comments revealed their arrogance and disregard for the significance of President Murmu's position and background. Modi emphasized that the President’s rise to the highest office in the nation was a source of pride and inspiration for many, particularly the tribal community.

In addition to his criticism of Congress, Modi also took aim at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), accusing them of misusing Delhi’s resources for political purposes. He alleged that the AAP leadership had diverted funds from Delhi to support its political ambitions in other states. Modi stated, "AAP-da (the AAP disaster) has looted Delhi's money and is using it to expand its politics elsewhere." He urged voters to elect a "double-engine government," a reference to the BJP being in power at both the Centre and the state level, to ensure better governance and coordination for Delhi's development.

The remarks have sparked a political firestorm, with the BJP defending President Murmu and accusing the Congress of elitism. In response, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra clarified that Sonia Gandhi had the highest regard for President Murmu and stated that the remarks had been misconstrued. However, this clarification has not quelled the political tensions surrounding the issue.
