Four Rohingya nationals, including a minor, were arrested by Railway Police at Santragachi Railway Station on Sunday afternoon while attempting to travel from Hyderabad to Bangladesh. The arrest was made on platforms 4 and 5, following intelligence provided to the police about their movement. The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Alam (23), Riyasul Islam (20), Begum Dilbar (34), and Rabiul Islam (16). They were attempting to board a train heading towards the Bangladesh border when they were detained.
Police sources revealed that the group had originally fled Myanmar due to the ongoing persecution of the Rohingya community. After reaching Bangladesh, they spent several years in refugee camps. In late 2024, they crossed into India without proper documentation, arriving in Hyderabad. There, they worked as migrant laborers. Faced with difficulties in Hyderabad, they made the decision to return to Bangladesh. They arrived at Santragachi Station from Hyderabad, intending to continue their journey back to Bangladesh when they were arrested.
The Railway Police have confirmed that the group had entered India illegally and lacked the necessary papers to be in the country. The authorities are currently investigating their travel route and whether any individuals or networks helped facilitate their illegal entry and movement between India and Bangladesh. The police are also assessing the group's status as refugees and their activities while in India. Further legal action is being considered in accordance with Indian law regarding illegal immigration.
