On February 6, two men were arrested in connection with an assault on a police officer and a civic volunteer in Garden Reach. The incident took place on the night of February 5, at around 10:10 PM, near Bandha Battala crossing along Paharpur Road. The victims, Sub-Inspector Arun Kumar Maiti (56) of Garden Reach Police Station and Lady Civic Volunteer Sangita Porey (3187), were performing their official duties related to the Saraswati Puja immersion when they were physically attacked by the accused.
According to the complaint filed by Sub-Inspector Maiti, the accused, identified as Aditya Paswan (20), son of Ashok Paswan of Q-140, Simpukur Lane, and Saikat Maity (21), son of Diganta Maity of Q-450/2A, Santoshpur Road, both residents of the Metiabruz area, physically assaulted them while they were engaged in their lawful duties. After the attack, the accused fled the scene, leaving both the officer and volunteer with injuries. Following the assault, both victims were immediately taken to SSKM Hospital, where they received medical treatment and were later discharged.
Upon receiving credible information, the Garden Reach Police Station initiated an investigation under the direction of the Officer-in-Charge (OC). The suspects were arrested around 1:10 AM on February 6, 2025, from in front of A-84, Shibnagar 1st Lane, in the Rabindranagar Police Station area. Both accused are believed to be members of the Shib Nagar Young Star group. The accused were apprehended by police and charged under Sections 121(1), 132, and 54 of the BNS Act, 2023, which pertain to offenses against the state and public servants.
Both Aditya Paswan and Saikat Maity are to be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Alipore on February 6. The investigation into the assault continues, and the police are committed to ensuring that all involved parties are held accountable.
