Midnight fire engulfs Narkeldanga slum: 16 fire engines battle flames for four hours

A devastating fire broke out in the Narkeldanga Khalpar slum on Saturday night, turning over 30 houses into ashes. The fire erupted around 10 PM, quickly spreading through the densely packed huts. Within moments, the entire area was engulfed in flames, and thick smoke billowed into the night sky. Panic spread among the residents as they rushed to save their belongings and escape the fire.

According to the fire department, 10 fire engines were dispatched immediately after receiving the distress call. However, as the fire intensified, six more fire engines were called in to battle the flames. Firefighters worked tirelessly for nearly four hours, finally bringing the situation under control around 2 AM on Sunday. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far, though several people suffered minor injuries while trying to escape.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire spread rapidly due to strong winds and the flammable materials used in the construction of the slum houses. Many families lost everything overnight, with only charred remains left where their homes once stood. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, with initial reports suggesting a possible short circuit or an unattended cooking fire.

Residents of the area are now facing an uncertain future, with many left homeless and without basic necessities. Local administration officials have assured immediate relief measures, including temporary shelters and food distribution. Several NGOs and community groups have also stepped in to provide assistance to the affected families.

The state government has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident, and compensation is expected to be announced for the victims. Meanwhile, the fire department has urged slum dwellers to take extra precautions against fire hazards, emphasizing the need for proper safety measures in such vulnerable areas.

This tragic incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by slum residents, where poor living conditions and lack of infrastructure make such disasters even more devastating. As authorities assess the damage, affected families hope for quick rehabilitation and support to rebuild their lives.
