A Royal Bengal Tiger was spotted near the Maipith-Baikunthpur area of Kultali Block in South 24 Parganas on Sunday night, triggering immediate action by the forest department. Officials from the Nalghoda Beat Office under the Raidighi Range arrived at the location and set up a nylon net to prevent the tiger from entering the village. The tiger remained outside the village overnight, but by early Monday morning, it was seen near the net. In response, a rescue team, including members of the local tiger response unit, initiated efforts to drive the tiger back into the forest.
During the operation, as officials attempted to force the tiger out of hiding, it attacked Ganesh Shyamal, a member of the tiger response team, biting him on the neck. According to local sources, the team acted quickly, using sticks to force the tiger to release him. The tiger then moved back into the forest. Ganesh was immediately transported to a nearby rural hospital for medical treatment. No other injuries were reported among forest officials or local residents.
The forest department has deployed personnel to monitor the area and track the tiger’s movement. Authorities have not issued an official statement regarding further action, and no information has been released about whether additional measures, such as tranquilization or relocation, will be taken. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, as human-wildlife encounters in the region have been increasing.
