A sanitation worker in Behala’s Seelpada area, under Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Ward 123, was beaten by locals on Wednesday morning after being accused of attempting to sexually assault a 4-year-old girl. The incident occurred while the accused was engaged in routine cleaning work. According to local sources, the child was playing outside her house when the accused allegedly attempted the assault. Some residents reportedly witnessed the act, leading to immediate intervention.
Eyewitnesses stated that an enraged crowd gathered, overpowered the accused, and tied him to a lamppost before physically assaulting him. His hair was forcefully chopped off, and his face was smeared with ink. Haridevpur police, upon receiving information, arrived at the scene, dispersed the mob, and took the accused into custody. Officials confirmed that the child’s family has lodged a formal complaint, and a medical examination of the child has been conducted as part of the investigation.
Authorities have begun collecting statements from witnesses, and forensic experts may be involved in gathering evidence. Police presence has been increased in the area to prevent further disturbances. “We urge people not to resort to mob justice and allow law enforcement to conduct a proper investigation,” a senior police official said. The accused remains in custody as further legal proceedings continue.
