A 4.0-magnitude earthquake struck Delhi-NCR at 5:36 AM on Monday, with its epicenter located 9 km east of New Delhi at a depth of 5 km, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremors, though of low magnitude, were strongly felt across the capital and surrounding areas, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in panic. No reports of casualties or significant structural damage have been confirmed so far.
Union Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh advised people to remain calm and take safety precautions in case of aftershocks. "Following the earthquake tremors felt this morning in and around Delhi at about 5:36 AM, the authorities are keeping a close watch, and professional experts as well as officials in the Ministry of Earth Sciences are constantly monitoring," he stated. He assured that regular updates would be provided through official channels.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also addressed the situation, urging residents to follow safety protocols and remain alert for possible aftershocks. "Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," he posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Despite the 4.0 magnitude, the tremors were unusually strong due to the earthquake’s shallow depth and close proximity to Delhi. The sudden jolts were felt across multiple districts of Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad, with reports of people being awakened by the shaking. Emergency services and disaster response teams are on alert, monitoring the situation closely.
The NCS continues to analyze seismic activity, and authorities have urged the public to remain cautious. Safety protocols, such as staying away from weak structures and securing heavy objects, have been advised. Officials emphasized that no major infrastructure damage has been reported, but further tremors cannot be ruled out.
