The alleged robbery in Kolkata’s Regent Park has been exposed as a staged crime, with the complainant, Sonali Biswas, and her brother-in-law, Raja Nag, arrested for orchestrating the false claim. According to police sources, Sonali, a resident of Muir Avenue, filed a complaint stating that a group of robbers had looted gold jewelry from her home. However, during the investigation, police found no supporting CCTV footage or eyewitness accounts, leading them to suspect foul play. Upon interrogation, Sonali admitted to systematically stealing gold ornaments from her in-laws' locker over the past few months and faking the robbery to conceal the theft.
Further investigation revealed that Sonali had taken around 150 grams of gold jewelry, and police suspect financial disputes may have been a motive. Officials stated that there were inconsistencies in her statements, which led to deeper scrutiny. “The complainant’s version of events did not align with available evidence, and there was no sign of forced entry or external involvement,” an officer said. Police also discovered that Sonali had financial dealings with a relative, raising the possibility that the stolen jewelry was used to settle outstanding debts.
Both Sonali and Raja Nag have been taken into custody and will be produced in court today for remand. Authorities are now investigating the exact timeline of the theft and tracing the missing gold. Police sources added that further questioning will determine whether more individuals were involved or if any of the stolen valuables have been sold.
