Over 12,000 police deployed, 9 charter flights arranged: ‘War-like’ security for CT 2025 in Pakistan

Pakistan is set to host its first major ICC tournament in 29 years, with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 beginning on February 19. The tournament will feature eight teams—Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, and South Africa. While all matches will be held in Pakistan, India’s games will take place in Dubai. The opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand will be played at Karachi’s National Bank Cricket Stadium following a brief ceremony.

Security measures for the event are at an unprecedented level, with over 12,000 officers and personnel deployed in Lahore and Rawalpindi alone. Punjab Police have assigned 18 senior officers, 54 DSPs, 135 inspectors, 1,200 upper subordinates, and more than 10,500 constables for match security. Over 200 female officers will also be on duty. Lahore will host three matches between February 22 and March 5, while Rawalpindi will hold three between February 24 and 27. Karachi, another host city, will stage three group-stage matches between February 19 and March 1.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced nine special charter flights to facilitate smooth travel for fans and teams. These flights will operate between Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore, aiming to reduce logistical challenges. PIA has also planned to showcase Pakistan’s culture during these flights. The tournament’s organization is being closely monitored to ensure seamless operations and security.

Pakistan last hosted an ICC tournament in 1996 when it co-hosted the Cricket World Cup with India and Sri Lanka. The country was originally set to stage the 2009 Champions Trophy, but the tournament was moved to South Africa following an attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore that year. Since then, foreign teams have been hesitant to tour Pakistan, and hosting rights for major ICC events were awarded elsewhere.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 marks the return of a 50-over ICC event to Pakistan, with comprehensive preparations to secure the tournament’s success. Authorities have deployed mounted security personnel, multi-layered checkpoints, and surveillance teams to ensure safety. With high-security protocols in place, Pakistan is aiming to demonstrate its capability to host international cricket events without disruption.
