A 29-year-old prisoner in Rajasthan’s Salaswal jail allegedly called the Jaipur police control room on Friday night and threatened to kill Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, officials confirmed. The inmate, identified as Rinku, is serving a life sentence in a rape case.
Following the threat call, authorities traced the phone's location to the jail premises. A four-hour-long search operation, conducted between 3 AM and 7 AM, led to the recovery of the mobile phone used in the incident. Police are investigating how the device was smuggled into the high-security facility.
This is the second instance in six months where a prisoner from a Rajasthan jail has issued a threat against CM Sharma. In July 2024, an inmate from Dausa Central Jail made a similar threat, while in January, a POCSO convict from Jaipur Central Jail had called the Jaipur police control room, threatening to shoot the chief minister. Officials are reviewing security measures to prevent such incidents.
In a separate case, Mumbai police recently received emails threatening to blow up Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s car. The emails were traced to a mobile device, and authorities arrested two suspects from Deulgaon Mahi village in connection with the threats.
Security agencies are assessing the repeated breach of communication restrictions in jails and examining the motives behind these threats. Further investigations are underway to determine any larger network involved in smuggling mobile phones into prison facilities.
