A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Kolkata and its surrounding regions on Tuesday morning, with the epicentre located in the Bay of Bengal. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the earthquake and stated that it occurred at 6:10 am IST at a depth of 91 kilometres.
The quake's epicentre was located far from Kolkata at Lat: 19.52 N, Long: 88.55 E, deep beneath the Bay of Bengal. Due to its significant depth, the impact of the tremors on land was relatively mild. As of now, there have been no reports of any damage or casualties from Kolkata or other parts of West Bengal.
Seismologists suggest that earthquakes with deep epicentres generally do not cause significant surface damage since much of their energy dissipates before reaching the ground. Despite this, mild tremors were felt in Kolkata and some coastal areas of West Bengal, leading to momentary panic among residents.
