BJP’s Tamil Nadu Art & Cultural Wing State Secretary, Ranjana Nachiyaar, has resigned from the party amid the intensifying debate over the three-language policy in the state. Her exit marks a significant moment in the ongoing controversy surrounding language politics in Tamil Nadu.
In a social media post announcing her resignation, Nachiyaar criticized the BJP for allegedly using nationalism and religion for political advantage while failing to respect Tamil identity. She expressed her dissatisfaction with the party’s stance on regional culture and language, stating that she could no longer align with its ideology.
Her decision to leave the BJP comes at a time when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has strongly opposed the Centre’s push for the three-language formula under the National Education Policy (NEP). The ruling DMK has consistently rejected any attempt to introduce Hindi in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing its commitment to the two-language policy of Tamil and English. In contrast, BJP leaders in the state have argued that learning Hindi would provide better opportunities for students and professionals.
“When people think of BJP, they often see it as a nationalist party or a party that protects religion. But when I see how national identity and religious sentiments are manipulated for political gains, I feel that I cannot align myself with this anymore,” Nachiyaar wrote in her resignation statement.
She also emphasized the importance of Tamil pride and identity, stating, “The dignity of the Tamil language, the richness of Tamil culture, and the respect due to Tamil pride cannot be compromised. I can no longer align myself with those who do not acknowledge this.”
