Abhaya’s parents, along with senior doctors and lawyers, have left for Delhi to meet the CBI Director and their Supreme Court lawyer. They aim to discuss the progress of the RG Kar case and raise concerns over the investigation. Despite sending an email requesting an appointment, they have not yet received any confirmation from the CBI. However, they are determined to visit the CBI headquarters and seek direct answers regarding the status of the case.
The parents have repeatedly expressed dissatisfaction with the pace and direction of the investigation. They claim that despite seven months passing, crucial forensic reports, including CFSL and DNA test results, have not been provided to them. “We are not satisfied with how the investigation is progressing. Important reports are still missing,” said Abhaya’s father before boarding the flight to Delhi. They also argue that more individuals were involved in the crime and want to know why further arrests have not been made.
A legal team from Sealdah Court and senior members of the Doctors’ Front have accompanied the family. They are also scheduled to meet their Supreme Court lawyer, Karuna Nundy, to discuss legal strategies. One of their key objectives is to explore the possibility of shifting the case back to the High Court for further hearings. The family believes that doing so will ensure a more transparent legal process and faster judicial proceedings.
Meanwhile, the CBI is preparing to file a second supplementary charge sheet in the case, focusing on allegations of evidence tampering. According to sources, the charge sheet includes findings from over 180 witness testimonies and CCTV footage analysis from RG Kar Hospital and Tala Police Station. The report is expected to highlight attempts to suppress critical information related to Abhaya’s death. It is scheduled to be submitted before the Sealdah Additional District Magistrate’s court on March 3.
In the primary investigation, the CBI has already secured the conviction of Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer arrested in connection with the case. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sealdah court. The agency is now appealing for a death penalty in higher courts. Additionally, former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and former Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mandal were arrested earlier for evidence destruction. However, they secured bail due to delays in filing the initial charge sheet.
The family’s visit to Delhi comes at a crucial juncture, as pressure mounts on the CBI to take stronger action against those allegedly involved in covering up the case. They plan to raise specific questions about the investigation’s progress and demand a timeline for pending forensic reports. If denied a meeting with the CBI Director, they intend to escalate their demands through legal and administrative channels.
